How SIA licence renewal works
Front-line SIA licences are typically valid for three years. Renewal is not automatic — you must apply through the SIA before your current licence expires and, for most front-line licences, complete the current SIA-approved refresher (top-up) training.
Why refresher training may be required
The SIA introduced mandatory refresher training so licence holders stay up to date with the latest legislation, counter-terrorism awareness (ACT), conflict management and physical intervention standards. The exact requirements depend on your licence type and when you last qualified.
First Aid and renewal training
Door Supervisors have needed an acceptable Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification since 2021. If your First Aid certificate has expired, or you're unsure whether it meets the current SIA requirements, you can add our 1-day EFAW course before the refresher.
What happens if your licence has expired?
If your licence has expired recently the refresher route is generally still available. If it has been expired for a long time, you may need to complete the full original qualification again. Check the current SIA rules that apply to your individual situation before booking.
When should you start preparing for renewal?
Most licence holders aim to complete refresher training at least a month before their licence expires — this leaves time to submit the renewal application and avoid a gap in your ability to work legally.
Door Supervisor renewal training
Our SIA Door Supervisor Refresher Course is 2 days at £250, delivered weekly.
Security Guard renewal training
Security Guard renewal requirements have changed over recent years. Contact us or check the SIA site for the current path, or consider whether upgrading to the Door Supervisor qualification (which covers most Security Guard roles) is a better long-term option.
CCTV licence renewal
The renewal path for a CCTV Operator licence depends on current SIA rules. We do not offer a dedicated CCTV refresher — speak to an advisor about the appropriate path for your circumstances, or check the official SIA guidance.
